Before I got the Saab, I was drivng my Ranger 4X4 to work. I had an old Mitsubishi pickup that we kept for a backup. I had not driven it for a while and decided one morning to take it to work. I saw what looked like evidence of a coolant or other fluid leak at the front and decided to check the oil (124K on the truck) and other fluids first. I was greeted by a hissing, snarling, tooth bared, groundhog of a full grown adult size. I an not sure who was more scared. I dropped the hood, and he went down between the steering shaft and the engine to continue hissing and chattering.
We finally got him out with a broom and he took off. Fortunately, he had not chewed anything (a common, expensive problem with rodents).
I live in the Washington, DC suburbs in Virginia and have never even seen a groundhog in our immediate area in the 11 years I have been here. Turns out the fluid leak was his urine. Also found some grass on the front subframe for his bed or a snack I guess. :)
Good thing I had not started the engine. A friend with a Toyota did that once and caught a cat in the fan and fanbelt. (Probably crawled in at night to the warm engine.) The flying fur clogged up her air filter and she was so grossed out she had to have it towed to the dealer to clean out the fur and remains.
