Turbos can be just as reliable (or unreliable) as normally-aspirated cars. I have driven 5 c900 cars over the past 14 years, three of which were turbocharged, and have never had any problems with a turbocharger.
1980 900 GLi- driven from 85,000 to 145,000 miles - it gave its life to save mine.
1983 900 Turbo- driven from 135,000 to 225,000 - rust-induced retirement.
1986 900 Turbo- driven from 165,000 to 210,000 - transmission failure
1986 900- driven from 175,000 to 200,000 (?-intermittant odometer failure) - transmission failure
1986 900 SPG- driven from 160,000 to 240,000 - still going...
Take a look at the high mileage listings for classic 900s, and you'll see just how reliable turbocharged saabs can be. All of the cars referred to as "900T" or "900SPG" are turbo models.
