Far be it from me to suggest keeping a car that you don't want to pay to fix every 6 months, but please be wary of switching a "known-quantity" used car for an unknown used car.
Also, you should consider that you may not be able to get anywhere near $6500 for a '93 9K, Aero or not. Not to be an ass or cause regrets, but honestly I think you overpaid originally for the car. It is a buyers market out there for used cars right now and you'll be very lucky to get what you ask for in most situations.
Even with all you've done to your Aero, I think there is a very good possibility that if you take the car to the same mechanic every 6 months, that you WILL keep getting those $x00 estimates .... perpetually. That's just the way things work it seems ... these guys are in business to make money from each car they see. Not saying that you haven't had legitimate repair issues, just that if you pay for every bit of maintenance a 9k needs at 75+ an hour, it really will add up.
That's a hard call, no easy decision. If i were in your shoes I'd keep the Aero and see if your friend can cope with some of first problems. Send him to the 9K board if he has ?'s!
-Good Luck, AMG
