Smitty, maybe post what you're looking for, museums, what kind of food, kids coming with, etc. Always catch a cubs game if they're playing, there are, oh, about a 1,000 bars all around wrigley field, so you have to pre and post-game party, that's all part of the scene, and it is a scene.
They just opened a revised Grant Park along Michigan Ave and the Lakefront, google "grant park the bean" which is a nickname for this new sculpture that is three stories high and looks like, well, a bean! and you will find out all about the sights there, love it or hate it, it's something to see.
Then the Art Institute of Chicago is right across the street, great air conditioning, its free on tuesdays.
Go to the top of either sears tower or john hanckock.
Try lincoln park zoo on the near north side, beautiful zoo in the park on the lakefront, then walk around lincoln park. And if you go there, my cousin owns a jewish/italian bistro that has great food about a block from the zoo.
Tourist spots to avoid, my opinion, north michigan ave/magnificant mile (too many tourista's, same old stores) navy pier (too expensive, not much there).
