As long as you won't be hitting rush hour around NYC, come up the Jersey Turnpike/I-95 to the George Wasington Bridge. Cross that and head north (I think it is route 9) over the Henry Hudson bridge.
Take the Cross County Expressway, Hutchinson Parkway, etc to get on the Merritt Parkway in CT. This turns into the Wilbur Cross Parkway. (both are Rte 15). There are rest/gas stops every 15 miles. (Nice for a pregnant wife!).

I do this route a lot (last was 2 weeks ago) and it is waay nicer than what is a very boring ride across CT on the western part of I-84, which has a lot of construction happening just now. I-84 is not so nice right now.

The Merritt/Cross Parkways run to I -91. Take I-91 Nort to I-84 East in Hartford. Take that to the Mass Pike (I-90), which runs into Boston.

If you are near Hartford when hungry, go to Rein's Deli in Vernon. It is exit 63 (I think--Vernon Center). Bear right at the fork, and it's in a shopping ctr on the left before the Mobil Station--maybe a mile up).

On the map it looks faster to take I-95 to Boston from NYC, or to I-91 and go up that way, but I-95 is very congested and badly surfaced in many places. And there are lots of cops.

Safe travels.\
