Well, you know media... they need a story, but... Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Any Saabers going to Burning Man?, Dean, Fri, 13 Aug 2004 06:04:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's pretty diverse with 30,000 people building a temporary city in the middle the desert (Black Rock City). If you're into meeting diverse people, re-connecting with your friends (we're camping with two other sets of friends), seeing some amazingly large art projects many of which include large scale pyrotechnics, and basically really and truly 'getting away from it all,' then Burning Man provides it. When I talk with folks who have never been, they all ask, "Is it true that people go naked?". Yes, I'd say one in 25 or fewer go naked, but with 30,000 people, that's still a good number of naked people... Fewer still are actually people you'd... well... ? want to see naked?, I guess is the best way to put it ;-) We went in 2002 and did a video projection theme camp. It was a lot of work but fun, but this year we're going to enjoy other folk's theme camps and are not doing a big project.
The desert can be pretty harsh. We got lucky in 2002 with it only hitting 95 degrees during the day, but the sun is INTENSE and you can really do yourself in if you don't protect yourself. There can be severe wind/dust storms and if it rains, you've got one heck of a muddy bog. The traffic out is not especially great either with 15,000 trying to leave on Sunday afternoon and another 15,000 trying to leave on Monday afternoon and it's a single lane (in each direction) undivided highway for quite awhile back to the interstate.
The law-enforcement folks are there in large numbers, so it's not some kind of free-for-all. If you're breaking the law (stealing, doing drugs, dealing drugs, engaged in violent behavior, etc, etc, etc), you'll quickly be busted and taken out of the city.
In all, for me, it was an amazingly unique and positive experience, BY FAR. We're going one last time before we attempt to get over the concept of being parents and actually become parents (I've newfound respect for my parents... I don't know how they managed one kid, let alone eight...)...
Anyway,
-Scott
