New car purchase frame of mind? Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What SAAB over the last 2 years held its value MOST?, Mark, Tue, 17 Aug 2004 07:30:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While I don't agree that "holding value" as the highest priority on your list is the right frame of mind to be purchasing any new car, the end of July and beginning of August have been great times to get the new Saabs at incredible values. All new cars lose quite a chunk of their overall value the moment you drive them off the lot. There is no getting around this. However, the incentives are so big currently (or were so big - I don't know what they are now) that you are minimizing your downside. However, see the flip side too... because of these incentives, the used car market prices are being driven down because you can't really charge more for a slightly used car than the current price of a new car, if you follow what I'm saying. So, if you buy now and next year, the base prices are lower and the incentives drive the price even lower than that... well, you see how your value will have to be lower... On the other hand, if you go into this with the plan to buy a car you really like and that you're going to drive for the next five years, well, that's kind of a different story. I think you get more value trying to sell a Saab with 90K miles privately rather than selling a Saab that has 23K miles... you distance yourself from the new car sale and you've driven yourself into better value territory. And THAT said, I still believe that a NEW car purchase is a lifestyle choice, NOT an investment... I bought a new Saab because I wanted to own a new Saab at least once in my lifetime and I could not be more happy with the model and timing of my purchase. I do plan to drive this car at least to 90,000 miles (currently 787). I have been spoiled by or earlier 9-3 purchase that was still under warranty (we picked it up at 15K for 40% off the original purchase price and got two years and 35K of warranty too!
So, good luck and most importantly, if you do buy a new Saab, ENJOY IT and have a lot of fun!
