But the real question is, what's the benefit? Do these 5 valve engines actual perform (or get better mileage or lower emissions or whatever) than 4 (or 3?) valve engines, or do they just cost more to manufacture? Here's some info for comparison:
Audi 1.8T (5 valve): 170 hp, 166 lb-ft, 22/31
Saab 2.0t (4 valve): 175 hp, 190 lb-ft, 23/34
Miata 1.8turbo (4 valve): 178 hp, 166 lb-ft, 20/26
on the small 4 cylinder turbo front it doesn't look like the Audi engine is anything spectacular.
Audi 3.0 (5 valve); 220 hp, 221 lb-ft, 20/28
BMW 3.0 (4 valve); 225 hp, 213 lb-ft, 20/30
Honda 3.0 (4 valve); 240 hp, 212 lb-ft, 21/30
On the 3.0 V6 front, it also doesn't appear that the Audi engine is anything spectacular.
I'll assume the Audi engine performs better with it's 5 valves than it would with 4. However, it doesn't appear to offer any benefit over other companies' 4 valve designs.
