Heya folks!
I just brought my 2003 9-5 Aero down to SAAB of Westport to get my a/c evaporator replaced and hopefully iron out why my car is consuming so much oil.
They gave me a 9-2x Aero as a loaner. My first thought was 'Turbo laaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggg'
BUT...this car handles like a go-kart! My lord what a blast it is to drive around. I live up in Woodbury, CT and the roads here just scream for a car like this. No lean, no drag...nothing through turns except the car. My Aero feels like a boat on water compared to this thing. I just got back from an extra 2 hours of just driving around. Red lines at 7k rpm's and gets there pretty quick once the turbo spools and kicks in. Seems to die out a bit in the end, but either way...this car is F.U.N. fun to drive!
Now as far as interior quality....eh. I like the way the controls are laid out, nice and simple and very easy to access everything. I almost made a hole in the center console by trying to jam the key in there though :)
No built in remote on the key which was pretty weird, but whatever....tiny little things like that really don't matter. I can see the cloth material wearing pretty easily though, doesn't seem all that rugged. DEFINATELY seems better in build than the WRX though. Controls all seem built well, stereo could use a better touch (farts out on bass pretty easily), but still sounds better than what I heard in a 9-3 loaner last year.
Ummmm...I'm a big guy, and it was a bit cramped inside, seat all the way back and knees still bent more than I would've prefered. But, the seat bolsters really tuck you in there. Just drove about 3 hours altogether and never once was uncomfortable, but the feeling of the 9-5's seats are just pure pleasure in comparison. Was told this car does not come in leather...is this true??? If it did, I think I'd have my wife in one pretty soon.
All in all, I'd like to have one if the sticker was a bit lower on it. Seems a bit much at $31,500 for what you get. Especially now that you can get a 9-5 for a bit less. Still can't compare the two as they are totally different worlds.
My neighbor here has a WRX Impreza and I'm going to go knock on his door and let him take a drive to see what he thinks. His lease is almost up and really likes the car, but always looking for something new. Maybe I can turn him on to a SAAB finally (he's not a big fan of european cars).
Fun car though...fun, fun, fun! Not a 'plush' automobile by any means, but it still has that 'solid' SAAB feeling to it.
