First off, you don't necessarily need a font manager for OS X. Place your fonts in the Fonts folder within the Library folder on the Home partition of your computer. I alphabetize mine by folder A-Z so they are easy to find and access, but OS X manages them for you.
Secondly, it sounds like most of your pain is coming from Quark. Quark has font issues that they are just ignoring or they have no clue as to how to fix yet. But none the less, there are font issues in Quark 6 and they choose not to acknowledge them...period. Specifically, I've been having trouble with the Optima and Futura Condensed families. Same fonts work fine in Adobe products. I even bought new families of these, and the problem still exists.
Quark has a patch on their site that will eliminate the message that says "Such and such font may be corrupt and may be replaced by Courier." The patch eliminates this message, but it doesn't solve the font problem.
So I don't really have a solution for you, but just know you're not alone on this one. If I get any new info, I'll certainly pass it along.
