5th gear car crashing

The british TV show Fifth Gear did an experiment in automotive safety on Monday's show. The talked about head-on collisions and showed several film clips of Saabs crashing head on. (like the silver and red 9-5's colliding outdoor, and the two yellow NG900's crashing together) Computer testing animations also showed Saabs being crunched. I was hoping they'd use a Saab on the show.
They mentioned most of the testing is done at 35 or 40 mph. They tested at 60mph which would be a more typical speed. They outfitted with radio control a previous generation BMW 5 series and a Volvo 9-something wagon.
Keeping in mind the squared relationship between velocity and energy, the energy of a 60 miles per hour car would be double that of a 40mph crash.
The crash and results were pretty frightening! They did an offset head on collision at 60mph and severely wrecked both cars. Both cars had front wheels where the drivers legs and the drivers door would have been. The whole side of the car was a crumpled mess and they declared it a deadly collision for sure. A professional crash testing engineer declared that newer cars would have been slightly better, but still likely to be deadly.
It was a fairly grim show, but fascinating. Perhaps they will do a rerun sometime during the week. Tivo gets it for me, so I don't know when it actually airs.
