my parents have an old caravan that they keep around that is a '94 with 230k on it. I remeber a couple of years ago we had a somewhat similar transmission problem, stalling and trouble getting into gear. The only reason i mention it is that we actually didn't have to get the transmission replaced. It ended up being a problem with a vacuum line of some sort. I am no expert whatsoever in this field and rarely ever have driven the car, but i remember that it only cost us a fraction of a new transmission. I think our local saab indie ended up doing the work as we've given up on dodge mechanics in our area....maybe something to look at before you get a new transmission.
if you do get a new tranny, i had a friend w/ a caravan put a stick shift off a dodge truck into the minivan. Got the tranny at a junkyard for almost no money...but that might be a little more risky than you want to venture...although his van still (5 years, 100k w/ stick) does run well with the stick, plus its pretty sweet to have stick minivan.
