I researched this quite a bit to help out the church which I and my wife's family attend. Right on the ocean, the shingles get damaged by constant wind and seagulls. 25 year shingles only lasted 12 on one side of the building.
Quotes for a new shingled roof were the same cost as a new aluminum roof with insulation under it. Steel was not an option so close to the ocean. I think it was a bigger roof than most roof shingling people like to deal with, and it was a small or normal sized roof for the company doing the metal roof. The metal roofing company does lots of schools and shopping centers and stores, so this wasn't unusual for them.
There are lots of colors available, durability is excellent, and the project was very comparable to shingles. I expect this roof to last three times longer than shingles at least. It is not loud during rain inside - probably insulation helped with this.
Since shingles are made with petroleum products, I'd expect they'd continue to get more expensive along with oil prices.
Metals have gone up in price quite a bit too, having a consideral effect on the price of materials. The church committed to the project last year and was spared the expense of this spring and summer's metal price increases.
My brother is building a house from a kit right now, and it has a pretty green steel roof with it. His family put it on, so it can't be terribly difficult or specialized for a small house.
I would definitely give metal a strong consideration wherever I might need to redo a roof in the future. The only minor downside I can think of is that it may be difficult to mount an antenna tripod on the roof, but antennas and sat dishes can be mounted to chimneys, and pipes can be stood off vertically from the eves too.
