Wheel/tire shipping costs, winter wheel sources

Ronal quoted me $180 to ship a winter wheel/tire package to the NY metro area. This seems excessive. Tirerack wants just under $60 for steel wheels. I know west cost is further than Tirerack’s warehouse, but still $180 seems very high. UPS quotes $54 and Fedex ~$34 (both ground for a 50lb 25”x25”x20” package, using Ronal and my zip code in NY). Double those numbers for a set of four. Then add in the discount Ronal is getting and something seems wrong.
I also was given a bit of a hard time when I wanted 225/50R16 WRs which are not stocked. They were special order and therefore discouraged saying that 225/55R16 or 215/55R16 were more suitable for the winter. Maybe the 215s, but definitely not the 225/55R16s. Then on top of that they want $25 more per tire because the 225/50s are V-rated. Other tire dealers charge either the same or at most $10 more per tire. Think I will email them and get a written quote to make sure I have this straight. To bad Saab didn’t switch to WRs this year.
How have others found the Ronal contact?
Any other places to try getting a WR wheel/tire package. Tirerack won’t sell Nokians because they can't get the volume they need.
Sorry for the rant.
