Yeah, prices are going up, and there isn't a lot to do about it. Yes, you can burn wood, but when everybody else starts to do the same, the price of wood goes up.
I don't know where you are in CA - I know there is a wide range in climate. I live in the Northeast, and we expect long, cold winters. Iowa is pretty well known for the same. So you may be shocked by her gas bill, but I doubt you wouldn't have been shocked by here gas bill two years ago when gas was cheaper. Paying a lot for heat is part of the deal of living in a cold climate.
