Before I got my '96 9000 last year I had retired my C900 from most long trips due to some reliability concerns. So I rented (it was a business write-off) and wound up in Taurus/Sables, Olds Intrigues, Toyota Corollas & Camry's, assorted Chrysler products, Impalas, even Mitsubishi Eclipses. It showed me that seats are one of the most important things. And after all--I was used to the seats in my old C900.
For my back and shape--6'2", 200 pounds, long legs-- the Toyota seats were fine for about an hour, then I began looking for a better position--which was not there. Not so good for a 7 hour run to western NY, or even a 4 hour run to NYC. Chrysler seats were no good in less than an hour--too soft, poor lumbar support. The Eclipse--both the coupe and convertible--were surprisingly decent. The Taurus/Sable were usually great, but only the power versions (6 cars, about 4000 miles). The Intrigue's (did about 2500 miles in two of these) were almost as good as Saab seats. The Imapala was OK, but generally too soft for a drive over two hours
Some of these were not so much uncomfortable, but I just kept having to adjust my position, looking for the right one, which wasn't there. My 9000, by comparison, and the 9-5 I rented a few years back, are perfect fits. I can do a 400 mile run and arrive without any aches or stiffness. Comfort is a safety issue, too, and also keeps you from being fatigued.
