Hi, First the answer is you'll notice a HUGE difference in speed, especially if you're using OS X on your current iMac.
Second, I'm afraid the iMac won't be a good DVD player for your plasma because there's no easy way to get a good quality signal to your TV. Any device that would do so with good results would cost way more than a standalone DVD player.
But, the 20" screen on the iMac does look pretty good with DVD's on it's own. I think Youy'll enjoy the upgrade to a better mac with a much better screen. Good Luck -AMG
