Hardware only cost versus overall package......

those who are technically competant can do away with service and support.
However, for some who are not into technical know-hows or don't have the time to build our own have to pay a price for service and support.
This is no different than Saab ownership. Your technical expertise and time is part of the cost.
You spend time and use your computer expertise to build a machine. You need to figure in the opportunity cost of your time and knowledge in the overall picture. Yes, you may only pay half the price of a Dell for an equivalent machine but you end up spending a weekend to gather the information and then spend more time to build the machine and load the software. Time is money, so by the time you add up the hardware cost plus the opportunity costs, I doubt you would be any where better than buying an equivalent machine.
Many don't consider the opportunity cost as in spending time fixing our Saabs 8-), unless your time is worth very little.
