I just acquired a 1995 900S with 87k and for me it has the same feel as a 240 'cept for the FWD and the hatch. They're totally differenct designs, but cut from similar cloth. After spending some time in a more modern FWD car, you may not look as fondly at a tank of a 240.
Like a Volvo with a six, some say NG900's with the six are to be avoided, but I don't think the early Saab V6's had anywhere near the problems of the Volvo sixes. My choice for you would be an SE Turbo, that's my favorite NG900. Although now that I own a 900S, a non turbo, non leather Saab has some appeal.
I wouldn't consider a classic 900 to be as safe or have as much modern engineering as a NG900. And any car that get's over 10 years old begins a new set of challenges with just age alone as well as with technical advances.
