Sounds like you may have had a crummy lawyer!
Story from a friend of mine:
A number of years ago (he was maybe 25 at the time), he was driving in Vermont in a snowstorm. Was in left lane, going 55 in a 55 zone. He passed a cop who was in the right lane going about 45, the cop pulled him over and wrote him up for reckless driving.
My friend got a court date and did some research into the law. Court date came, he went in front of the judge and quoted the law which stated that to be guilty of reckless driving in Vermont, you need to lose control of the vehicle, depart the road, and cause property damage or injury. He pointed out to the judge that he never lost control of the car, therefore never departed the road and never caused damage or injury. Judge said "you're absolutely right" and let him go. Every once in a while you *can* beat city hall!
