Any investment gurus care to help a novice (long)?

My candid situation is this...I have 18k in a savings account at 3%, no debts of any kind, saab is paid for and in top shape (yay!). I have no current investments. I was a stay at home dad for 8 years, now back in the working world as a freelance writer, roughly 45k per year. No 401k access at the moment, but that will most likely change, as my current client has plans to take me on staff permanently in beginning of '05. I'm 35, divorced (sadly), yet healthy and happy with joint custody of my two children. I'm gradually adding to my savings, hoping to save for a house/condo, but I know that with this meager savings I don't have a prayer, without making this money work better for me. Are there really any short-term (3-5 years) options out there? Are there brokerages that anyone could recommend? I have my eye on a strong stock (probably just like everyone else does!) that seems to still have some steam left. Ideally I'd like to funnel a chunk into that, and the rest into something more sane. Thanks for any and all guidance!
