Check with the restaurant first. I would be very surprised a gallery would hang paintings in a restaurant. Most likely the restaurant is doing it to help the artist and in exchange they get free paintings on their walls. They might be taking a cut also. I have bought many paintings over the years and found artists are always negotiable, as long as you don't go through a gallery. Recognized artists are rated, a bit like a stock on the market, and they sell their work at a fixed price per square inch. These artists are not likely to be found on restaurant walls but you never know. IAC, what is important is that she likes the painting. That's what's great about art. I hung a painting in our living room one Xmas without my wife seeing me. The look on her face when she discovered it was worth every dollar...and I'm talking a few Ks.
