Absolutly. Long time + short trips are bad. Every 3 month I feel is excessive but twice a year I think is a good rule if you don't put that many miles on the car.
I'm with you there in the thought of chemical disturbance and I'm wondering if the semi-synth oil Saab have been using is very good on the paper only but have some nasty characteristics when it is combined to bad fuel, cold starts and over long time.
Yeah I worked as a machinist for years in Sweden so I'm aware of when suddenly the cutting fluid went bad and you had these nasty growth going on in the holding tank of the lathe. We even had one person employed to keep track of the fluid in the central room with all the cleaning/refining equipment for the cutting fluid.
What I'm fairly certain about though is that we will never get the full truth in what's causing this.
