ntsc, which is north america, pal, which is europe and northern africa area, and secam, which is scattered in a few places. asia/australasia/asia are pal usually.
there are some tv's that will play multi formats, as well as vcrs that will play multi formats, but in usa they usually sell only ntsc recorders. most newer camcorders do have a menu function on them that will allow to playback in pal or ntsc mode.
however, having said that, you are recording in a non-ntsc mode which is why its not working on your tv. if your camcorder doesn't have the multi playback mode you will need to get the tape converted to ntsc so you can play it in your vcr. hope this helps.
mark :-)
