other safety features required in cars that seats are not mandated to hold up in an accident. Having been rear-ended in my old '78 Scirocco and my wife was hit in our C900 (both cars survived fine) I know the seats held up and gave us the protection we needed.
I can see where some engineer can make an arguement that having the seat fold back helps dissipate the force of the collision, but it probably costs only $10 or so to make the seat stronger to begin with. All it takes is shaping and bracing the frame a little differently and maybe an extra weld or two. Cradled in a properly shaped and padded seat, your back can take a huge amount of force--witness fighter pilots and astronauts.
Seats are one of the reasons I buy Saabs. None are safer or more comfortable.
