The best advice I got from my company IT guy was to buy a normal 3.5" drive and a standalone case to put it in. You'll save a boatload of money, and if you ever want to buy a bigger drive, all you do is swap out the old drive and drop in the new one. It is a piece of cake to assemble if you're at all technically proficient.
I got a Western Digital 160GB drive and so far haven't had any issues with it. As others have said, don't feel that you need to use the drive manufacturers' fancy backup utility if you don't want to. I use rsnapshot, which in turn uses rsync, to maintain multiple backups (I back up once a day, and keep a week's worth of data at a time) of my /home drive and all my digital music.
I'm very happy I went with an external drive. It will certainly pay off when I get a new computer and want to move all my stuff to it.
