I analyze Salmon for mercury content at McGill ... and believe it or not, at least in the fish from atlantic farms (Nova Scotia and Newfoundland) I routinely find less Mercury content in farmed fish than the wild samples we recieve from streams in the same areas. The huge numbers of fish (10,000 fish in the size of a big living room is not uncommon, literally you could walk on them if they stood still) in farms seems to limit the amount each fish can be exposed to Mercury.
I can of course only speak to mercucry content, and there are many other worries about farmed fish. For health, No one should really consume any salmon more than twice a month, I know its good, but trust me on this one! Swordfish, Sailfish and Sharks are dangerous to eat more than once in a while, their harvest is also very destructive to the enviroment.
Just thought I'd add what I know from University work to the conversation.
