Not positive on the negatives of a float charger, don't mean to polarize the board with my answer (sorry, it's winter-storm seige mentality beginning)....
If you leave a trickle charger hooked up, you can boil your battery. You want one that reduces voltage and amperage as the battery becomes charged. Perhaps that's definition of a float charger, but many chargers start at high, reduce to trickle.
Battery-Tender Plus is what I use on my motorcycle.
If you don't mind disconnecting the trickle charger, they can do the job, just don't leave them continuous. After the car has been sitting a couple of weeks, hook the trickle charger up for a few hours. Or you could put it on a timer for 1/2 hr per day. I would just get the Battery-Tender and know that my battery is safe.
