I would guess that most owners don't bother with winter tires, but that is not me. I run dedicated winter tires on steel rims with Saab wheel covers from Mid-November thru Mid-March. I have a 90+ mile round trip daily commute and I very much enjoy the added security that having winter tires gives me during the snowy and icy months. The snow and ice storms here in Michigan over the past three weeks have once again convinced me I am making the right decision.

But you asked more than one question. Chains are probably not an option with the 17-inch tires. Depending how much winter driving you do, you may want dedicated winter tires or you may be fine with All-Weather (not All-Season!) tires such as Nokian's excellent WR tire. Another possible choice for limited winter driving would be Pirelli's P Zero Nero M&S.

If you decide to get dedicated winter tires, also get dedicated winter wheels. I bought steel wheels as a cost savings measure, but used alloys can sometimes be obtained for a similar cost, and they look better! Your Dealer also sells winter tire/wheel packages which always include excellent winter tires. Originally Saab's packages came with Gislaveds but now they use one of the Goodyear winter tires.

As another poster stated last week, your added cost for dedicated winter tires is not the cost of the tire - since every mile driven on those is one less mile driven on your (usually) more expensive summer tires. Your added cost is the cost of the wheels and the annual change-out. But that will be much less than one deductible payment to your local body shop if you wind up in the ditch, or in someone else's traffic accident.

Enjoy your car.
