viewing. For planetary work, get a moderate scope that has a *STURDY* mount and ease of use. You don't want an expensive Meade or Celestron in the beginning, especially one that is hard to tote around and setup unless you can setup the mount somewhat permanently and just remove the scope for storage.
The Astroscan is an excellent idea. Great optics, easy to set up, rugged, close to indestructible for a scope 8-). The only hard part is pointing that thing. However, if you use low magnifications, it would give many hours of son & father time 8-).
Making your own is fine for a dedicated teenager but probably not for an 8-year-old, unless you want to spend the time.
You really want to spend the money on a truly sturdy mount or tripod. I stress the word STURDY, more so at higher magnifications.
Don't get too hang up on magnifications of the scope. You would be better off with a wide field telescope where the scope can show star clusters or nebula in great contrast than a scope at 200X showing blurry Saturn swimming in air turbulence.
No better way to bond with the little one under the stars 8-).
