I have been keeping my old car (1997 900S 105,000 miles)partially as a spare but mostly because I love it too much and don't have the heart to sell it. I bought a 2004 9-3 Linear in March which I enjoy as well.
As for keeping the old car, here's what you should know
PROS...
- you still get to drive the old one
- you won't miss it
- you still have a hatchback to carry stuff
- you save money on depreciation of the new car by using the old one instead
- you stay in warranty longer with the new car
- you can ride out spikes in gas prices a little better
- you have an automatic "guest car" for when friends visit from out of town
- you can say to yourself, "Which car should I drive today?"
CONS...
- car insurance costs go up
- just one more thing to worry about, especially as it gets older
- two cars to wash and wax is a pain
- there is capital tied up in the old vehicle you could be investing elsewhere
- you need two of everything, like snowbrushes, tire gages,...
- you leave something you need in one car while driving the other one
- you have to find parking spaces for two cars
Also, if somebody in your family needs an old vehicle, you can let them use it and still maintain ownership. If you plan on getting married soon to a car-less person, and will need another vehicle, keeping two now is better than selling one and buying another one later.
Hope this helps.
