OT: Networked computer firewall ?'s...

I've just upgraded my office CPU and gave my old warhorse to my wife and kids. As a result, I've networked the two systems together via a dLink 524 wireless router. After using ZoneAlarm forever with no apparent hacks, I'm being told to "turn down" or disable my ZoneAlarm software and allow the router to act as a hardware firewall. I'm problably being a "nervous nellie" but the idea of disabling my old friend is giving me the creeps.
Is this "safe"? Is a hardware firewall (the router itself) better than ZoneAlarm software? I've spoken to dLink tech support and have yet to be fully assured.
As always, Thanks in Advance,
Allen in New Orleans
P.S: It's a very early Carnival down here this year (Feb. 8th) and the City is gearing up for another big party! Those of you who have never experienced a N.O. Carnival should come down for a visit! Tonight's big show is the Krewe du Vieux... a real "cut to the bone" and "no hold's barred" parade of satire, mirth, and extreme tongue-in-cheek merriment. Check out WWOZ on the web to get a sampling of Carnival spirit.
