Hockey is Dead - Long Live Hockey Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Sat, 22 Jan 2005 16:06:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is right about the time that I get into watching hockey. The first season is over (pre all-star game) and the second season is just starting in which teams actually try to make the playoffs (not that hard since half the league gets in - hence the third season = playoffs). Anyway, it's not to be this year and probably not next year either. There's no minor league team in the Bay Area to watch. My cable showed the Junior Championship which was really quite fantastic to watch, but really, there are NO games on TV here. The NHL is dead, European hockey is thriving. Upper-Midwest Junior hockey is playing to sold out arenas. My dad who lives in Florida goes to very good ECHL games (also regularly sold out)... At this point, I'm so sore at the league, I'm not sure I'd patronize an NHL game again anyway.
I like Darren Pang's recent article in which he cites a quote on the back page from the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement Binder:
"Create a strong Player/Owner partnership ..."
Vs what the Player's Union President and current NHL player, Trevor Linden was told by the league's negotiators a couple of days ago in their last attempt to meet:
"...players would have no more say in how the NHL is run than auto workers have say over how an auto company is run."
Sure, some players are sitting back enjoying the interest on their millions that the owners gave them bidding up their salaries against one another, but there are more players who play for the league minimum, which last I read was something like $135K pro-rated over games played etc... I can't even vouch for the accuracy of my own info, truly.
It's a sad state of affairs for my favorite sport. They're just killing it.
