I like Mike's idea of the weighted bike wheel on a free-spinning platform to demonstrate angular momentum. That could be a hands-on thing for the kids. (I did it as an undergrad while sitting on a free-spinning stool...a great way to demonstrate and experience angular momentum)
What about energy storage in a large spinning drum as a source of motive power... You touch on angular momentum, torque, and rolling. You could have a clutch engage to transmit power.
I agree that some interaction for the students is a plus for that age group. YOu could have them speed up the drum/whatever to give it energy, demonstrate how hard it is to stop, whatever.
Sounds like a good project. (I like the teaching aspect of it...teaching requires that you really know what you're talking about.)
