Interesting article. I put RFID systems into auto plants, but they're more for tracking vehicles through paint and assembly shops. I'll be getting a new generation reader/writer later this week so I can do a demo in a stamping shop. Since a lot of folks in my office have Ford Freestars (new van) I'll have to try to read their keys. I may also try to read my condo entry key. If I can read it I'll be embedding some tags into my car's driver's side mirror... No more fishing for that card!

The technology isn't rocket science. It's a chip with an antenna to make up a passive tag. I'm pretty sure Philips and TI are the chipmaking leaders now. Alien is up there, I think... The RFID field excites the chip and it can be read or written depending on the software functions included in the antenna. It's only data on the tag, so if you can read it, you can replicate it onto another tag. The tags I'm used to using are over 40bytes, and you can get a decent code embedded into 40 bytes. It's not like a 4 digit number so a thief would just have to run through 0000-9999. Well, who knows what the automakers actually write on the thing.

Perhaps I'll find out if my vendor's reader reads car keys.
