"Puter" ???

I am trying to resurrect an old Compaq Contura Laptop, I got at a garage sale. (I'm a sucker for antiques with 4 wheels or a single cpu!) It boots to an A:\ prompt O.K., has 24 megs of RAM, and I am trying to install a Connor 420 MB hard drive. On boot up it gives me a 1790 Disk 0 Error.
If I try to fdisk, I get a "Cannot read drive error". I got a little farther using Compaq's Softpaq #2054 which is supposed to help initialize and partition hard drives. It seems to read the system/drive specs, but then it stops and gives me a "runtime overlay error" message. Then I have to pull the plug on the p.c. and take the battery out to get it to boot bak up. I've tried Compaqs home page for help and forums, but I find it very hard to navigate their site. Seagates site, gave me some help
but it is not CPQ specific. I am kinda new at digging this deep into "puters", so please forgive me for imposing on you beacuse I know this forum has some of the best brains in the business! Thanks for
your help! P.S.: As a hint, shouldn't I see a screen on boot up that gives me an [F-10] SETUP option?
