but the SLR name is carried over for digital.
A SLR (single lens reflex) camera that uses real film has the advantage of seeing almost exactly the picture you want in the viewfinder. There is a mirror in the camera that diverts light from the actual camera lens to the viewfinder. When you release the shutter, the mirror quickly moves away and the shutter opens thus exposing the film and hopefully captures the image you just saw in the viewfinder on film provided you set the proper exposure etc.. The main feature of a SLR is the ability to put different lenses on the camera body, set exposure time, f-stop, etc., to suit your photographic needs.
In a digital camera, there is no film, but a light detector, and you actually see 90%+ what the lens/detector captures on the camera display. So in this sense, every digital camera is a SLR (in the analog sense), i.e. what you see is what you get. In many digital cameras, the exposure is set by the camera itself and you have little control over the exposure time or f-stop and there is usually no provision to change the camera lens.
In a digital SLR camera, similar to a film type SLR camera, you can change the lenses, set exposures, etc...
