Great points and advice. With larger pixel count comes larger file sizes. A consideration if emailing photos and you or your recipients are NOT on broadband.
On batteries, a few comments. Are the batteries rechargable? Are they proprietary to that manufacturer? How expensive? You do not want a great deal and get an orphaned, proprietary or expensive battery. If rechargable, most of the newer types are far, far superior to NiCads which develop memory and lose a charge.
A few years ago, I selected an Olympus 3020 over your target price then), since they used Lithium batteries (great life, fast recycle, higher cost), or alternately 4 AA rechargables, or even 4 AA alkalines in a pinch (very short life). I did this since I would take it on international trips. I took spare batteries, but in an emergency could use AA alkalines. What is common in a large city drugstore, may be unattainable in a rural or international setting, even in a specialty store.
