When a large distributor like Wal Mart (and there is none larger) approaches a manufacturer, the distributor provides the specifications for that component. And Wal Mart is relentless in driving the price as low as possible.
So just because the manufacturer is Sony (as an example), don't assume that you are getting the same quality you would expect on a Sony-branded component. Sony doesn't just slap a different nameplate on and sell it for half the price. Some re-branding occurs in many markets, but not when it comes to Wal Mart. WM has enough volume, and requires such low costs, that anything WM gets will be specifically engineered for them.
My guess is that WM's in-house electronics are built by a variety of companies, depending on who can provide a specific component at the lowest price this week. And I'll bet that most are China-based manufacturers you've probably never heard of. This isn't a knock, or a comment pro or con. In terms of high volume and low price, WM can not be beat. But you don't get something for nothing.
