The rule for years has been never check things like cameras in your luggage. I heard of one guy on a travel site who was bone-headed enough to put his laptop in the checked luggage. It was gone. But the airlines still claim no responsibility. GRRR!

Now that so many bags are X-rayed and not locked, I wonder if the theft rate has gone up, since they can see in each bag without opening it. I don't check bags often, but when I do I usually have stuff like a multi-tool, Swiss Army Knife, fly rod and reel and it's always there when I open my bags--much to my surprise. But locks never made a difference anyway. You can get into any coil-zippered bag with a ball-point pen in under 10 seconds. And close it up when you're done.

I fly a lot and have given up worrying much about what the airlines do. I carry on anything I care about and check luggage only when absolutely necessary. As for skis and heavier stuff, it helps to have a lot of miles on an airline--they are sometimes more lenient with regular customers. You can also check skis in one bag and other stuff in another and beat the weight rule.

No, it's not fair and it's a lousy way to do business, but if you fly a lot it's just part of the imagined "glamour" of travel. And even the profitable airlines have the most of the same rules, so AA, CO, US, UA, DL, etc., aren't really much worse. Lose something on SWA or other low cost and you get the same treatment.

Did 55K in the air last year, will probably do at least that this year. Already at about 15K. Groan.
