http://www.fordyce.org/scanning/index.html - good site showing what's available in different areas. Lots of sites like this on the net. Another good site is the FCC's license search database to show what frequencies are assigned in your area. http://wireless.fcc.gov/database_info.html
I have an amatuer radio license, but like scanning more. If I want to communicate with someone far away, I'll use the internet or a phone. I like radio technology and systems though.
I've got a simple newer bearcat bct7 scanner, two actually, one for work, one for home, an '80's radioshack digital scanner (from when they were a good enthusiast name, and pre-cellular-ban), and a Yaesu VX5R handheld radio/receiver. Someday, I'll get a computer controlled scanner.
Get in soon, things are moving slowly to digital and then you won't be cheaply or legally able to listen to much at all on the airwaves.
I mostly listen to local police/fire/weather, but like just scanning through ranges to see what's available too.
