We loved our bamboo. It was a wonderful natural fence and sound barrier and visual barrier. We lived in densely packed neighborhoods in Silicon Valley and it made our backyard seem much bigger and secluded than it actually is... For the first six years we lived here, it was well tamed, but two years ago, it started taking off in all directions and annoying one of my neighbors, although another loved the thick poles I would cut down for him to use in his garden and I would use them in my garden too. We finally got a crew to take it out. They were using chainsaws and pulling up 75 pound concrete-like blocks of roots. It was very hard work but we got it all. I see a few shoots pop up now and then, so it's still lurking, but as long as I stay on top of them, the roots to each shoot that makes it up end up dying without any source of light. I thought we'd have many many more shoots than we have had, so it seems like a success. I'm looking for the photos now. I just uploaded them into my gallery.
