I did it several summers ago. In August, the mosquitos were unbearable and the heat was a bit much, but we still had a great time. On another non-camping trip to the Keys, I remember laughing that the Mosquito Control Board is an elected position. Now I know why!
I stayed at Pennekamp on Key Largo and Bahia Honda in the lower keys. Both parks were great and had a lot to offer, so I would recommend a couple days in each. Bahia Honda probably wins for scenery, and the Lower Keys are surprising undeveloped. Most of the restaurants and bars were very local oriented and untouristed. Amusingly, a gentleman at a roadside seafood restaurant offered to sell me his 9000 with a blown axle for virtually nothing. He seemed surprised that I was from out of state and couldn’t take him up on his offer.
As much as I love the seclusion of the lower Keys, I would definitely plan to spend at least an day and evening in Key West. Feel free to shoot me an email, and I can recommend some restaurants and attractions if you like. Don’t forget the bat tower!
Have a great trip!
Craig
