Maybe no new V6 for Saab afterall.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Sounds like a field-day for contract lawyers. If Holden was to supply the block, heads, or complete engine to Saab for the new V6 in the Sport Combi, it now sounds like it won't happen. Anticipatory Repudiation anyone?
Australia’s Ion to Close Cylinder-Head Plant

CANBERRA – Ion Group Ltd.’s cylinder-head plant is to be closed in July, putting a crimp in Holden Ltd. plans to make all-Australian V-6 engines at its plant in Melbourne.
Ion administrator Colin Nicol says the car parts group’s Adelaide plant will close July 1, even though customers had agreed to a 50% price increase.
"Despite this very significant price rise, the plant continues to operate at losses of A$18 million ($14 million) a year," Nicol says.
The A$110 million ($85 milion) cost of the plant was almost double the planned A$65 million ($50 million).
A month ago, Nicol canceled Ion's partly built aluminum engine block project that was to have supplied Holden with more than 200,000 engine blocks a year for its High Feature V-6 engine. Holden has contracted to export engines to the rest of General Motors Corp. next year, including units for Buick in the U.S. and Saab and Cadillac in Europe. It now is searching for an alternative source for cylinder heads, oil pans and engine blocks.
Holden has a crucial role in GM's parts sourcing network as only one other GM plant, in St. Catharine’s, Ont., Canada, makes the V-6 engine.
“We now are looking worldwide for a new (components) source,” a Holden spokesman says. "We are very disappointed about this. We worked very hard with the administrator to find a solution. There was nothing else we could do."
