I had some synthetic on hand years ago and put this in a regular lawnmower engine (honda overhead valve). It smelled for a while. My interpretation is that the piston was gummed up and oil was burning when the synthetic cleaned up the gum and then the rings, which may have been stuck then freed up, reseated. The smell of burning oil later disappeared which I concluded was the end of oil burning.
