The big difference between juice and fruit, I think, is that fruit has fiber which juice lacks. If you peel and eat a grapefruit, for example, you get more fiber than if you eat just the sections with a spoon, which is more than just drinking the juice. Vitamins and such should be about the same, but the fiber would be lacking. That's assuming, of course, that you're not eating some kind of sugar-added juice.
As for the other, different types of vegetables/fruits have different attributes, which is why they call for variety. But the list you gave is pretty diverse. Broccoli and bananas, for example, are pretty different in their vitamins, amino acids, etc. I think that what they mean is "don't eat 8 bananas a day." A citrus fruit, something green, something orange (like a carrot) would be a good mix.
I might be mistaken on these new guidelines, but I don't think potatos count as vegetables. Aren't they starch, like bread?
