I've got a D100 and a friend as a D70. The 18-70 lens that comes with the D70 kit makes the package an awesome deal. Nikon ED and AFS is very nice, and it comes with a metal mount instead of the plastic Canon mount.
I've payed for more ED and AFS for one lens than most people pay for a lens and the camera combined. Digital quality is so good, you can tell the difference between lenses. Whereas if you were still shooting tri-x or other 400 speed black and white film, it wouldn't really matter what you had for a lens.
As far as megapixels go, you need 4x as many to get twice the detail, so I suspect the difference between 6 and 8 would be minimal.
Nikon Capture is a great piece of software too. Be sure to splurge for that. It is much better suited to the task of settings tweeking than photoshop if you shoot raw image files. (Photoshop is still great at what it's good at too)
