For general home use, web surfing, etc., both will work just fine. Yes, Firefox runs just fine on both. I happen to like Safari a lot, but you can use MS Internet Exploder (IE), Firefox, etc., all with no problem.
Here are a few differences between an iBook and a Powerbook- Primarily expansion.
I'm going to assume that you're talking 12 inch ibook and 12 inch powerbook. Screens pretty much the same. When you go bigger, the 15 inch PB screen is pretty darn nice - much bigger than the 14 inch ibook.
The ibook is smaller - if you're carrying it around, you'll find the ibook easier to carry.
The PB has much better expansion capability, and more I/O. The ibook supports up to 1.25GB of RAM; same for the 12 inch PB. The 15 inch PB supports up to 2GB. Frankly, I'm running 768Meg on my G4 PB, and that is plenty.
The PB has more video in and out capability, and audio in, that the iBook doesn't. For example, I use my PB along with my turntable and stereo to convert my vinyl records to CDs. You can't do that directly with a iBook. But you can buy an audio to USB for the iBook for a few bucks.
The iBook has 1 400MBS Firewire port - the PB has on 400 and on 800MB firewire. Both have the same number of USB ports.
The PB has a slot for a Type I or II PCMCIA card. The iBook doesn't.
If you're thinking of doing video editing or lots of fancy audio stuff, the PB has the edge. If you're going for the bigger screen, I think the PB has the edge. If you're going to carry it around a lot, the iBook definately has the edge. Both will do all the same stuff.
When I got my PB, the only iBooks available were limited to 768Meg, and that was too little for me. That barrier is past.
If there is an Apple store in your area, go and play. The two units have different feels. The PB is pretty impressive, but it's not tiny, especially if you go to the 15 inch unit. If you go to the 17 inch unit ("the coffee table") - it's huge. But again, either one will do the job quite nicely. And as someone that has a Windows laptop for work and a PowerBook for home, once you get used to the differences in the Mac OS, I expect you'll love it.
