If you want a little more of a challenge, scrape around for vintage tube gear and some horn speakers (e.g., Klipsch), and maybe an AR turntable. Horns are ultra-efficient (requiring only a few watts) and pair very well with tubes.
Unfortunately this isn't an original idea, so tube gear is getting harder to find, but if you've got time to invest in your search, you might find the rewards are worth it. Ironically, it's sometimes easier to bring tube stuff back to life than solid state, which often requires replacing impossible to find output transistors and the like. Tubes are easier to find today than they were even five years ago.
Above all, have fun with this. Audiophilia has been known to dissolve some folks sense of humor.
