I've overseen the installation/maintenance of several Carrier units on flat roofs at work. First a roof curb is installed that creates a base to sit the "rooftop unit" on. Once the roof curb is in there is no more roof work to do. Our units(5) are gas(both LP and NG) with electric AC. In our case the air handlers are in the unit so only the ducting is inside the building. Easy access panels for belt and filter maintenance from the roof. I'm not saying they're the most efficient but they certainly work well. C.
